Lights Out

Did a quick shoot for a photo contest about spaces. Drove by the infamous Magic Mall a while back and thought it looked like a cool place to shoot at night. Took a few shots and I’m not sure if I’ve got anything solid but I plan on submitting my entry this week. Hoping for the best, lets see if anything comes from it.
Went and peeped the demolition aftermath of the old Amway Arena. Not that impressive from outside the fence. Im sure it looks much cooler from inside.
Im actually looking forward to the new Creative Village that Orlando is building in the old arena’s place. Condos, schools, parks, and new businesses. All that sounds cool and all but that’s not what I’m interested in.
What I’m interested in is somewhere the people of Orlando can go to other than Lake Eola, Park Ave, I-Drive, and any of the other places TripAdvisor recommends or that we’ve been to a billion times.
Orlando doesn’t have a steady scene of something fresh. If you’ve lived here for more than 2 years than you know what I’m talking about. Everything’s the same, not much changes. So for anything to be new in this city is exciting just because its something new to do/check-out.
Im not expecting this new area to change the face of Orlando (that will take years). I just hope it inspires the rest of this city to be more cultural. (Who knows, it might not be that great in itself)
Maybe im just talking out my ass. Or maybe I just want to be able to skate all around DT to different spots without getting bored. Or maybe I just need to eventually move out of here. Hmm…
From Bicol, we flew back to Manila for what was supposed to be a 2 hour layover before catching our flight to Kalibo. Three flights ended up being delayed that afternoon so we ended up staying an extra 3 hours. These people weren’t happy.
Finally boarded.
So since our flight was delayed for so long, by the time we landed and got to Kalibo, we still had to drive to the jetty port where the boats take you to Borocay. We arrived to the port to find a huge line awaiting us. As soon as we joined the end of it, we heard a voice over the intercom say, “Due to rough waves, we will only be transferring passengers until 10 p.m. tonight.”
It was 9:30.
Well you guessed it, they closed off the line and were not taking any more passengers until 6 a.m. the following day. We had the option to stay over night inside the terminal and wait, or dish out some dollars and stay at one of the very few local motels and rush back into line in the morning. We opted to have a sleep over in the terminal along with a couple other hundred people. Most people were pissed and even one dude left smashing a glass door on the way out.
So now it was a game of musicial chairs without the music. People were making beds out of plastic chairs. Some slept on the floor and others just didn’t sleep at all, like me.
Ritchie and I gambled a lil bit.
Across the street was Andok’s. This place was the only buisness open for fresh hot food. Earlier the line was ridiculous. They must have woken up every employee in a 10 minute radius cause they went from 2 employees to about 6 in no time. I think they even hired a few people on the spot just to handle the traffic.
“You! You’re hired! Get over here!”
They have some bomb chicken tho. Thank you Andok’s for keeping me alive.
Walked around in the wee hours of the morning.
Eventually 6 a.m rolled around and everyone was scrambling to fight for their spot in line to catch the next boat. We snuck in the front like ninjas and grabbed the first boat out of there.
Checked into Queens hotel and got acquainted with our surroundings. The last time we were here was in 07’. Back then there weren’t many businesses or hardly any people. A lot has changed since then. Commercialism has plagued this island of it’s natural beauty and filled it with tourist attractions and cheesy gift shops. I guess it’s like SADE said, “It’s never as good as the first time.” It’s all good tho. Even tho the weather wasn’t great that day, we didn’t let anything rain on our parade. We’re in Borocay. There’s no reason to be upset.
Ahoy!
Besides being one of the best beaches, Borocay has some of the finest sand in the world. It’s like walking on flour. This shit is so soft. It’s like a tempurpedic for mermaids.
Sand Graffiti.
Checked out Willy’s Rock. [pause]
“REPRESENT! REPRESENT!”
Definitely a Lazy Afternoon.
Jonah’s got that good good.
The equivalent of a Honda Civic for island peoples.
We got 2 more days in this Filipino paradise. Stay tuned for more pics. I’ll be posting on my trip here and there. Ciao.

Its Christmas day and relatives from all over the area are coming in to take family pictures.
Oh, Hello!
These guys wouldn’t let me put my camera down.
Cousins by the half dozens.
Brother, sister, pops and mom.
Peace to all the family who made it out on Christmas. Thank you for the cake and making such a special day even better.
Driving out to Donsol to go swim with some whale sharks.
The ocean was like glass that day.
The weather that day was not very favorable for spotting whale sharks. Gloomy, raining on and off, and with the wind it was kind of chilly. We weren’t even sure if we were going to be able to go out since it wasn’t peak season for the sharks plus the whole weather factor. So we hung our for a while and ordered some food. Then as soon as I took my first bite, one of the guides yells, “LETS GO! THREE SHARKS HAVE BEEN SPOTTED THIS MORNING OFF SHORE!”
So off we went.
There were four guides that took us out. Two guides up front, one in the back steering, and one up top to spot the sharks.
Im not going to lie, being out on that boat was not fun. It was probably 60 degrees with the wind, plus it was raining and water was splashing on us from the boat hitting waves. But whatever, we made the best of a cold situation. About 15 minutes in we spotted our first Butanding [whale shark] and geared up like SWAT dropping in on underwater bank robbers.
I attached the GoPro around my head so I could document the mission. It was my first time using it underwater so I was hoping that I set everything up correctly. Anyway heres a short clip of how it went down.
As you can see, there was not much of anything. I probably saw the shark for like four seconds as it swam right beneath us then into deeper water. Maybe if the weather was better we’d have better visibility. Oh well. Next time butanding.
At least Ali had fun.
Jumped into the jeepney and went back to the hotel to wash up.
That night was Christmas Eve so we went up the hill to Daraga and did the whole midnight mass.
This church was packed to the maximum and some! So many people just hanging out outside. My brother and I couldn’t get in for the longest so we decided to nom out.
Finally squeezed in and caught the later half of mass.
Afterwards, we walked down the pathway to Auntie Cielo’s for dinner. Almost stepped on this slimy dude.
Someone stopped by while we were gone….
Dinner is served.
This past Saturday was the second installment of Rich Medina and The Movement, brought to you by non other than the good folks at The Lazy Afternoon. This was definitely one for the books. We had Ynot, LT Smash, and Kittybat holding it down on warm up. Then, with bases loaded, Big Rich came in and smashed up the whole place grand slam style. It was a beautiful thing. BIG ups to everyone who came out and showed love. Remember kids, first Saturday of each month. Substance Gallery. Rich Medina. The Movement.
